Dharamkumar Seeraj, a Member of Parliament representing the People’s Progressive Party yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.
It was alleged that on Thursday September 17, 2015, on the Bath Settlement Public Road, Seeraj drove motor vehicle PMM 5895 in a manner dangerous to the public.
Seeraj, also the General Secretary of the Rice Producers’ Association, was placed on $40,000 bail and is to return to Court on October 14, 2015.
Yesterday this newspaper carried a report on this matter and misrepresented the facts of this incident.
Seeraj was represented by Priya Manickchand, Attorney-at-Law, who asked the Court for a certified copy of the analysis from the breathalyzer test that had been done on the day in question which showed that absolutely no alcohol was consumed by Seeraj.
The Court was clear that it was not seized of any matter that would indicate that Mr. Seeraj was under the influence of alcohol.
In the application for bail, the Court was also informed that it was in fact Mr. Seeraj who had contacted and informed the police of the incident and had brought them to and taken them from the scene of the accident
Seeraj was heading east along the Bath Settlement Public Road when a car turned without warning and clipped the back of his car. The contact caused Seeraj to crash into a parked truck. Fortunately no one was hurt.
Kaieteur News apologises for stating that Seeraj had abandoned his vehicle and for suggesting that he may have been under the influence of alcohol.
The newspaper is satisfied that neither of this was true.
