The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday threw its support behind the striking private cane farmers of the Upper Corentyne. The cane farmers are protesting the removal of a 30 percent reduction in payment for the year’s crop supplied to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).
The Opposition noted that such a decision would lead to private cane farmers being pushed into a state of destitution. It emphasized that, like the rice farmers, the private cane farmers need assistance from government.
The PPP stated, “This is another example of the APNU+AFC government turning its back on another group of agricultural producers who have been producing significant amounts of both cane sugar and rice for local and overseas consumption.
“This retrograde step by GuySuCo is a glaring example of bad agricultural policies and the company’s non-commitment to consult with stakeholders in the agricultural sector.”
The Opposition party said that all the promises made at the Agricultural Farmers’ forum held in Georgetown earlier this year, have blown up in the faces of the said participants as they are experiencing the subsequent negative developments that have come to affect them.
Further, it said that the move by GuySuCo shows how as a result of bad agricultural policies, farmers in the Agricultural Sector are bound to suffer severe economic hardships.
The PPP is of the view that any depreciation of the economic benefits of the cane farmers and the rice farmers, must be stoutly resisted since both having been left to fend for themselves without any help from the Granger-led Administration.
The PPP reiterated its call to the Granger-led APNU+AFC Coalition Administration to pay close attention to the demands of the workers and farmers in the Agricultural Sector, since to a large extent, agriculture still remains the backbone of the economy.
“The struggle of the cane farmers, sugar workers and rice farmers will intensify in the months ahead as the APNU+AFC Coalition Administration continues to ride roughshod over their rights to a decent livelihood,” the PPP said.
It emphasized, too, that the ‘good life’ which Granger spoke about during his elections campaign, has once again proven to be a mere campaign slogan since Guyanese from all walks of life continue to suffer on a daily basis from the anti-working people policies of the APNU+AFC Coalition Administration.
The PPP said that it stands in full support of the private cane farmers and demands that their rights to a decent and prosperous livelihood be upheld.
