…as trial nears end for Sanjay Jewellery Store owner
Proprietor of Sanjay’s Jewellery, Bishnarine Persaud, who is accused of causing the death of Mayor and City Council handyman, Leon Hunte, by dangerous driving, was yesterday called on to lead a defence.
Persaud is accused of driving in a manner dangerous to the public, while piloting motorcar PKK 5501 on September 10, 2014 at Lamaha Street, Newtown, Georgetown thereby causing the death Hunte.
He has denied the allegation and has been released on $1.5M bail.
According to reports, Hunte, 55, of Stone Avenue, Blygezight, Georgetown, was riding his pedal cycle when he was struck from behind by a sports car reportedly driven by Persaud.
It was reported that Hunte was pitched some distance away and died before an ambulance arrived on the scene.
As the case was called again yesterday, Persaud gave an unsworn testimony before City Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Persaud testified that on the day in question, he was heading east along Lamaha Street, driving cautiously. He said that the place was very dark.
Persaud said, “Suddenly I saw a dark object appear in front of me. I swerved to the left to avoid a collision. I crashed into the lantern post. I took a few minutes to come out of the car.”
After exiting the car, Persaud testified that he saw a gathering of people.
“I went up and saw a bicycle with no lights or reflector and a person with dark clothing lying on the ground.”
Persaud added that after his observations, he contacted the police. Upon the arrival of the police, Persaud said that he explained what had occurred.
He said that after speaking with the police he started to feel pains in his chest, hand and neck.
“Next thing I wake up in the hospital and the police asked me if I was okay”, he recalled.
Persaud told the court that the following morning he discharged himself from the hospital and visited the Kitty Police Station where ranks conducted a breathalyzer test on him. He claimed that the test revealed he was within the alcohol consumption limit.
Rising as soon as Persaud concluded, his Attorney Glenn Hanoman, informed the court that the defence had no witnesses to call and closed its case.
Thereafter, Hanoman requested an adjournment date to make his closing address. Police Inspector, Vishnu Hunt also asked for time to make a closing address on behalf of the prosecution.
This matter comes up again on October 9.
