Police have detained ex-policeman Mark Cromwell, called ‘Demon’, in connection with the death of 68-year-old security guard Michael Woolford. The guard was shot on September 9,last, while on duty at the Cummings Lodge Secondary School.
Kaieteur News understands that Cromwell, whose last known addresses are Lot 40 Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, and Lot 10 Buxton, East Coast Demerara, was taken into custody on Monday.
It is alleged that on September 9, one man had chopped the other in the vicinity of the Cummings Lodge Secondary, when a third man emerged from a car and fired several shots. A bullet struck Wolford, who was on duty at the school.
According to reports, the shooter, who identified himself as a policeman, placed the wounded guard in a car which took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Woolford succumbed last Friday. Relatives had stated that Woolford, who fathered 13 children, had been diagnosed with cancer of the stomach and was also diabetic.
Mark Cromwell, the alleged shooter, was dismissed from the force some time ago. Police had sent out a wanted bulletin for him last May, following the interception of a large arms cache at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) Wharf.
The cache had included two AK 47 Rifles, four .40 pistols, eleven 9mm. pistols, 15 extra magazines for the firearms, 489 various caliber rounds for the firearms and a body protection vest.
Jamal Murphy, 21, of Lot 40 Vigilance South, East Coast Demerara, was charged in connection with the arms find.
