There have always been issues at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation but things recently took a drastic turn for the worse, said a senior Medical officer.
There seems to be a direct correlation with the introduction of the current matron into the system and the change in events.
The matron’s actions have so far been contrary to the norms of Medical practice and have led to staff indiscipline and a lack of accountability in the system, the officer said.
Her dismissal had led to small protests arranged by her close friends in the system. Their demands for her reinstatement and removal of the CEO have so far been met. These have raised quite a few eyebrows in the system.
The current Minister of Health, Dr. George Norton, was supportive of her removal. He publicly said so. Throughout all of this, though, the Guyana Public Service Union fought valiantly for “their close friend and colleague”, the Medical officer said.
“They have somehow managed to manipulate the government to supersede the Minister of Health and reinstate her.
“She is now wreaking havoc at the Hospital and punishing staff that did not publicly show support for her. Numerous threats are being sent around to Nursing staff and they are now more fearful than ever.
“Some nurses are given unfair posts, working hours and are constantly pressured. Positive advancements in nursing care are now being sidetracked and primitive practices are starting to resurface,” the health officer said.
He said that the Matron and her friends are bypassing the authorities in the hospital and making decisions that go against the rules of the corporation.
The Assistant Director of Nursing is being denied her office which is now being used by the friends of the Matron to relax and sometimes for Union meetings.
“Everyone is scared to act since they are afraid of the Union and the much touted “power” wielded by this Matron.
“She and her friends have verbally and physically harassed an Office clerk who is now severely depressed and is constantly victimized at work.”
The many reports against the Matron have so far gone unaddressed. Reports to the GPSU against the Matron, by the Assistant Director of Nursing are being ignored so far.
Meanwhile, nursing care is degrading and there is no proper plan to address it. Patients are suffering and are sometimes left to die without any nursing care, staff members are now contending.
“GPHC is beginning to crumble because of the actions of a few selfish and power driven persons. The actions by the Matron, her friends and the union have so far been biased, unfair and detrimental to patient care.”
The view at the GPHC is that if the Government continues to lay a blind eye to this situation, then many will suffer and lives will be lost. Chaos will prevail and a promising system will return to primitive practice.
“Our Government needs to show that it cares for the patients and the people. People voted for a Government to run the system not a union.”
