Dear Editor,
It is beyond me why everyone including the government, the opposition and the citizens are ignoring the fact, or pretending not to know that the Mayor and Councillors of the Georgetown are illegally occupying and carrying out functions at City Hall.
With the end of its normal life coming in 1997, three years after they were elected in 1994, the last time a Local Government Election was held in Guyana, the respective Ministers of Local Government have had out of necessity, placed bills before sittings of the National Assembly and had them approved to have the lives of the NDCs and Councils extended each year.
This was however not done in 2014, so the lives of these NDC and Councils came to an end on December 31st 2014. Consequently, from the beginning of 2015, this malfunctioning City Council in our capital, well known for its massive corrupt practices, nepotism, cronyism and shoddy services that it has provided to the citizens for the last 21 years, continues to operate with the same group of city ‘fathers’ and ‘mothers’ illegally sitting around the horseshoe-shaped table pontificating and illegitimately making decisions, whilst receiving a monthly stipend each along with other perks.
I would therefore like to ask the Minister of Local Government, the Minister of Governance, the Attorney General and the Opposition Leader to bring an immediate end to this charade by having these bodies notified that they are no longer lawful entities nor are they legally entitled to make decisions for the citizenry.
Can you imagine that these very Councillors who are squatting illegally at City Hall have the audacity to speak of illegal structures, illegal vending and illegal dumping? To make it worse, some of them also live in illegal structures on the City’s reserves.
I will make it my duty to mobilize others to legally challenge the decisions made by this Council since the beginning of 2015, including the amnesty given on outstanding property taxes, contracts awarded to individuals and companies to provide goods and services, the repositioning of vendors, the appointment of new staff and the launching of many cosmetic and frivolous municipal programmes as these are all being done by a group of persons whose legal and moral mandates have expired.
