Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Slingerz FC secured their first wins of the inaugural Stag Elite League last evening at the GFC ground.
Alpha United’s Kenneth Oparaemetuche (airborne) misses the ball from a corner late in the game against GFC.
Having notched up two draws prior to last night respectively, the two favourite clubs ensured that they took full points last evening; Alpha on account of two second half goals beat home team Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 2-0, while Slingerz FC took care of West Berbice’ Monedderlust 3-0, all coming in the first half.
Alpha’s most experienced player, Grenadian national Kithson Baines continued his fine form in the attacking third by nailing the first goal in the 57th minute on an assist from debutant Dwayne Lawrence who came on as a second half substitute.
Lawrence’ introduction was exactly what the doctor ordered for Alpha who found it tough against the Bourda boys who looked compact in the middle and defended stoutly. But they finally cracked at the back with Lawrence who took control of the left side squaring the ball in the six yard box to the onrushing Baines whose full length dive ensured the ball beat goalkeeper Derrick Carter.
Exactly 10 minutes later, Alpha doubled the advantage but this time, Lawrence who transferred from Slingerz did it on his own. In tandem again with Baines they broke the defence of GFC to the extent that only goalkeeper Carter was standing in the way.
Carter had no other choice but to advance out of goal and just outside the area in the center of goal, Lawrence dribbled Carter to his right and with an open goal at his mercy, slotted the ball home in the 67th minute to seal full points to move into third place in the standing with the similar 5 points as second placed Slingerz on goal difference.
Carter, who fell awkwardly on his right knee after being dribbled by Lawrence did not take any further part in the match and was replaced by Ronel McLean in the 73rd minute after being treated for about four minutes on the field.
Alpha pushed forward even more in the remaining minutes with Lawrence and Baines switching positions, they forced a number of corners but couldn’t increase the score even with the four minutes of added on time.
The opening game saw Slingerz taking full points at the expense of Monedderlust, their second loss in as many matches. Slingerz finally got their scoring act together and by the end of the first half were up 3-0 with goals coming off the boot of Captain Tischard Joseph in the 21st, Dwayne Jacobs in the 37th and Vurlon Mills one minute later.
Monedderlust, who lost to Fruta Conquerors on Thursday last, would have always found it difficult to come back from three goals down to create another upset having claw their way back from being two down against the GDF to win 3-2.
Again, the West Demerara based Slingerz created multiple opportunities but were less than effective upfront, Domini Garnett, in the first half and Anthony Abrams in the second missing clear cut chances.
However, Slingerz secured the game with their first half goals which propelled them into second place behind leaders, Fruta Conquerors who will be back in action tomorrow and would have the chance to extend their lead further when they entertain GDF in the feature game at the Tucville ground.
Opening action pits Pele and Buxton United from 18:00hrs.
