The Golf Course was in excellent condition – in fact, Captain Chen Deo declared that the Course is ready for Guyana’s greatest annual tournament, the Guyana Open, scheduled for October 31st and November 1st – but it was Roberto Grissi’s excellent play that edged him past the fierce competition from youthful Laksmana Ramroop who placed second in the exciting Trophy Stall tournament last Saturday.
This fourth successive tournament in three weeks since the Club began tournaments after weather and ground conditions prevented play for over 2 months, had all the excitement that has come to characterize tournaments this season.
Golfers enjoyed the conditions – fine weather, superb tee-boxes, fairways, greens, bunkers and even roughs – so that great scores were the expectation. Roberto Grissi commented, “It was an excellent day! I felt good while playing. All my plays – driver shots and fairway shots – landed the ball in the centre of the fairway, so that caused me to have a good finish!” On the other hand, young Laksmana, winner of the previous Saturday’s tournament (and son of Club President Shyam Ramroop), confessed, “I played well, but I missed short putts for about five holes! If not for that I would have had an even better score.” Both Roberto and Laksmana turned in a net 63, but a better back nine score for Roberto edged him into the winner’s seat.
End of tournament winners were: 1st – Roberto Grissi 27/63; 2nd – Laksmana Ramroop 26/63; 3rd – Richard Haniff 16/65; Best Gross (and 4th) – Sam Harry 11/67; and Nearest to The Pin (16″) – Kassim Khan. (Last year’s Trophy Stall tournament of September 27 was conducted in Flights; this year the open medal Play system was used.)
At the presentation of prizes, Club President Shyam Ramroop thanked Managing Director and Proprietor of Trophy Stall Mr Ramesh Sunich for continuing his annual sponsorship of a Golf Tournament. Trophy Stall, a leading supplier of trophies in Guyana, has been involved in sponsorship of sports in all the disciplines in Guyana, and has been supportive of the Lusignan Golf Club in significant ways for over 16 years now, providing and sometimes sponsoring trophies as well as sponsoring tournaments.
A significant event in the Club’s history was the public announcement that the Club Manager, Ms Alicia Bess (who had been crowned 1st Runner Up in the Miss Guyana Universe pageant of 2013,) on the evening of Friday 25th September 2015, placed Guyana and “Guyana’s premiere sports club – the Lusignan Golf Club”- in the minds of a wider range of persons, when she was crowned the 2nd Runner Up in the Miss Global International pageant in Trinidad. All present were high in praise of Ms Bess for her achievements and for the professionalism and excellent flavour she has brought to the Lusignan Golf Club as its Manager.
There will be no tournament at the Club this coming weekend as several of Guyana’s Golfers will be away to Suriname for Golf Club of Paramaribo’s Republic Bank Invitational 2015 Tournament on 3rd and 4th October.
