Lindeners are expected to converge at the Wisburg Secondary School today for a public consultation on the Dakoura Creek Watershed management plan.
Environmental Management consultant for GWI, Samuel Wright, said that the consultation is aimed at providing updates on the Rehabilitation of the Linden water System and present the Dakoura Creek Management Plan (DCWMP).
The DCMP is also expected to establish an association and take feedback on concerns and suggestions.
The Dakoura Creek which is located west of Block 22 and Wisroc will be the sole source of water for the western subsection of the rehabilitated Linden Water System.
But according to Wright, mining, indiscriminate disposal of waste, and logging have been identified as potential threats to the sustainability of the Creek as the sole water source.
Farming on the periphery of the watershed and the construction of houses in close proximity has also been cited as threats.
“When people build too close to the watershed, there is the danger of septic tanks and pit latrines draining right into the water source, and thus contaminating it.
Farming too close is also very dangerous because the pesticides and fertilizers are going to wash down and seep into the water. That can cause serious health implications, Wright lamented.
It is because of these potential threats that a protection strategy based on institutional controls has been proposed and will be developed as the Dakoura Creek Management Plan (DCMP), Wright added.
The proposed protection strategy was based on management of the watershed to ensure its sustainability as a primary water source.
Stakeholders include local and national government agencies, business entities and regulatory agencies.
Some of the stakeholders are Bosai Minerals Guyana INC, Central housing and Planning Authority, the Evironmental protection Agency, Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Guyana Forestry Commission, Guyana Lands and survey, the Hydromet Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Linden Mayor and town Council and regional Democratic Council.
