Unsupervised cancer patient bleeds out, dies

The Ministry of Public Health has launched an investigation into the death of a 10-year-old boy, who was allegedly left to bleed for a long time at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). This incident reportedly occurred two weeks ago.
According to information, Mekland Roberts, who lived in Region Nine was flown to the medical institution after being diagnosed with leukemia, which is cancer in the bone marrow.
He was being given saline when the needle inserted in his wrist dislodged and caused blood to spill. The lad was left to bleed for a long time according to a reliable source.
While this was happening, no nurse in the ward was checking on the lad.
Kaieteur News was told that when the nurse who had inserted the needle went to check on the child, she discovered that he was unconscious and his clothes and bed sheet were blood-soaked. Blood was also on the floor.
The nurse allegedly cleaned up the blood on the floor before she called for the doctor, who then transferred the 10-year-old to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit where he remained unresponsive until he died.
Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, could not be reached for a comment yesterday, but a staff member at the Ministry said that the Minister is aware of the matter and it is being investigated.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer would only say that the incident is under investigation.
