The Anna Regina Town Council’s approach to restore the National Policy against road vending, especially in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), was met with a protest staged by vendors, yesterday.
The protestors were said to be operating illegally on the Anna Regina Old market road for a number of years.
Angry vendors are insisting that the protest action would continue on Monday when the council has planned to take stringent measures to remove them altogether from the road.
Some vendors are claiming that they didn’t receive notices of removal while others argued that the Council has not offered alternative accommodation for them to operate and make an honest living.
“Where will we go? We all have to live.” “Leave us alone, we have family to maintain.”
Reiterating the Council’s national stance on the issue of “illegal or street vending”, Chairman of the newly formed Intermin Management Committee (IMC), Mark Mc Lean, said that vendors operating on the road shoulders of the Anna Regina Old Market always knew that roadside vending is illegal.
The decision to remove them from the road was made known to them weeks in advance. Mc Lean stated that the previous IMC had effective mechanisms to deal with the issue of street vending but the whole issue became a “political football”.
Mc Lean said that while street vending is also a traffic hazard, all the vendors who have been selling on the road were given notices, almost a month ago. The IMC Chairman said that a meeting was attended by almost 20 vendors.
Mc Lean spoke about the overwhelming discomfort of street vending, citing traffic hazards and the impact on legitimate business owners.” Entrances and parking accommodation for business persons who supply products to legitimate vendors and vehicle users generally are affected.
Mc Lean said that vendors operating in vehicles were also issued notices and advised to seek the Clerk of Market for relocation. Mc Lean said that the majority of vendors operating on the Anna Regina old road are persons who would have abandoned their stalls in the Bush Lot market.
