Dear Editor,
Freddie Kissoon slammed Donald Ramotar for incorrectly using “intuition” instead of “intention” in a letter published in a newspaper (KN Sep 22). It was an error of the writer as much as it was of the editor of the publication. But Freddie picked on Ramotar chiding him for misusing the word and said nothing of the editor (of the newspaper) who failed to pick up the error and make the appropriate correction. Does that not suggest a personal gripe against Ramotar? If anyone is to be blamed, it is the editor, not Ramotar.
Clearly, Ramotar made a Freudian slip, a faux pas, if you will, in the usage of the word. We all make errors as writers, even when we speak at times. There is no perfectionist. The best of writers make errors in word usage. Even Freddie makes numerous errors – misusing words, misinterpreting theories, and misstating other peoples’ views. But Freddie will have none of it when it comes to others, refusing to excuse Donald, wading into the man’s intelligence and poking fun at him.
One can make a case that Ramotar may not have had the capacity to be President, as several prominent Guyanese noted, and that he made several blunders as President. Indeed, I penned on several occasions that Bharrat Jagdeo made a mistake in promoting Ramotar as the Presidential candidate and that Moses Nagamootoo or Ralph Ramkaran or Navin Chanderpal or Priya Manickchand or Robert Persaud would have been better candidates. Any of those figures would have taken the PPP to a majority victory. But why pick on Ramotar who never pretended to be anything than what he is – a simple person.
Ramotar never claims to be an academic. He recognizes his limitations in academia and can be excused for his speaking and writing errors. But Freddie claims to be an academic who has taught at a university for 26 years. Yet this is the same Freddie who manufactures data to support his theories and who himself said he was granted two degrees in Guyanese History when no such degree exists anywhere in the world. Freddie himself said he studied German Philosophy. So any claim of being awarded two degrees in Guyanese history would be a fraud. This is the same Freddie when people referred to him as “Dr.” did not correct the title when he knew it was incorrect. His conduct was/is inexcusable. Donald’s is excusable and he has not poked fun at people for their errors. Donald is humble whereas Freddie is not.
To err is human. Freddie should learn to be humble and to forgive people for minor errors. Freddie has made countless errors in usage of words, too numerous to mention here. Freddie can learn a lot from self-reflection and self-introspection.
