After an absence of 14 years Inter-County softball cricket is set for an impressive return on October 24 at the Everest Cricket Club.
The tournament which is being organised by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL Inc) and sponsored by Crown Mining Supplies, Stag Beer (Ansa Mc Al) and Digicel was launched yesterday at Crown Mining Supplies in Dennis Street, Campbellville.
Eight teams, two each from Essequibo, Berbice and Demerara and one apiece from Linden and Bartica will vie for a top prize of $500,000 and a trophy, compliments of Trophy Stall Bourda Market. The runner up will take home a trophy and $300,000 and the losing semifinalists $100,000. The other participating teams will receive $25,000. The teams will play each other twice with the top four going through to the semi finals.
Speaking at the launching ceremony Marketing Executive of 93.1 FM and Parsun representative Kort Yee said they are pleased to be associated with such an event adding that the radio station will provide updates on the tournament.
Vice President of the GSCL Inc Ian John noted the importance of sponsors in such a contest and thanked them for their support while cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud stated the venture is good for the game and will motivate the players.
Ansa Mc Al Public Relations Officer Dharshanie Yusuf said they are happy to partner with the other sponsors for such an event stating that Ansa Mc Al is committed to the development of sports, while Digicel representative Louanna Abrams expressed gratitude to GSCL Inc for giving them an opportunity to be part of the competition.
The competition is being dubbed Parsun Outboard inter-county softball championship and will conclude on October 25 at Everest. The tournament was last won by Essequibo.
