Five months after the deadline for the Walter Rodney Creative Writing Awards, the three winners to this year’s competition have been revealed. They have also been notified.
They are Andrew Hutson who won with his story, “The answers are never on time,” Jivita Pyneandy who was second with her story “Once upon a Renegade,” and Akola Thompson who secured third place for her story, “The Awakening.”
Both first and second place winners were given honorary mentions for their submissions in last year’s competition which was won by Saraswatie Bharrat and Subraj Singh. This is the second year of the competition.
Sara Bharat, 1st Prize winner in
the Poetry category, reads her work at the inaugural 2014 Walter Rodney Creative Writing Awards ceremony in Guyana.
The awards ceremony which was to be held in July will now be held in October. The delay was credited to the first deadline being pushed back to accept more submissions.
The Award which is under the patronage of a private philanthropist, seeks to improve the standard and discourse of creative writing in Guyana; the main focus being on rewarding original works from recent and current students of the University of Guyana.
The Walter Rodney Awards for Creative Writing was launched in October 2013 under the auspices of the Walter Rodney Foundation (WRF) based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The WRF seeks to improve lives and build capacity through scholarship and programs that promote education, health and human development from a social justice perspective.
