The King Medas-Pansy Adonis 5km Road Race Classic is scheduled to return this year on a date to be announced, but promises to doll out in excess of $1.4 million in prizes according to founder and organiser of the event, Andy Medas-King.
“King Medas-Pansy Adonis Classic is second to none; it’s the most lucrative 5k in Guyana. This year, awards and prizes, along with some grants will amass to over $1.4 million,” Andy Medas-King said in a press release.
Medas-King indicated that for the first time this year, he has included the 8 & Under and Masters categories, based on feedback from athletes. In addition, this year features some new prizes; there will be a prize for the youngest male and female athletes, competing in over 1km.
Secondly, prizes for the most improved male and female athlete in the 17-20 categories and the oldest male and female athlete in the Masters category will also be up for grabs.
“This (the prizes) was a thought after considering the need to boost confidence in the athletes and I’m doing things different to what track and field is used to. I have included some 8gb and 16gb tablets for special prizes, along with some flash drives, cards and my signature running shoes,” Medas-King added.
He said all that was done because of the call from the athletes and coaches, who keep asking him to make the race bigger and better. Medas-King said the main focus is to promote Guyana to the world. He believes much more is required in that regard.
“So I am calling on all the clubs and school athletes to come out and get registered at the Athletic Association of Guyana office on telephone number 231-7106 or contact Mark Scott on 684-5250 or David Ward on 674-6328,” he urged.
Medas-King encouraged parents to bring out the kids since, “we have races for kids as small as 6 years old”. “I am calling on all the regions to come out and take part in this event, which is for all of Guyana,” he added.
“I would like to highlight that this is the only event that prizes are given out from 1-10 places. I would like to thank some of my sponsor’s, who came on board after looking at what was being done for the athletes,” Medas-King noted.
He listed the sponsors of the event as Ansa McAl, Fly Jamaica, Angie Hair Store, Daddy’s Enterprise (Guyana and USA), Shelmac Photos (USA), Prodigal and Laparkan. “Without these sponsors this event could not have been at this stage and magnitude,” he said.
