ChildLink Inc. in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection, and Delegation of the European Union, on Wednesday, opened a Child Advocacy Centre in Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, Region Five.
This facility funded by the European Union, is only the third of its kind in the country. Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence, noted that it is a step in the right direction, decentralizing the service since Georgetown is not Guyana, hence the need to take the services to the people. The other centers are in Georgetown and Vreed-en-Hoop.
ChildLink is a nonprofit organization which has been around for more than a decade. It caters for the vulnerable children in our society, conducting forensic interviews and providing counseling services for victims of all forms of abuse. The organization works in collaboration with the Child Protection Agency which operates in more of an investigative role.
Minister Lawrence stated that the high number of cases reported where children are forced to live away from their homes or their parents because they are being abused appalls her. And she assured those present that her ministry as well as the Government stand ready to take a strong position against all forms of abuse, as well as, they are ready to play their role.
The Minister added that she believes that people can work towards prevention of abuse, by being more vigilant. She also said that parents as well as members of the community must stop protecting the perpetrators.
Director of Child Protection Agency, Mrs. Ann Green, noted that personnel in some 92 percent of primary schools around the country have received training to be able to detect unusual behaviour, which should lead to early detection of cases. All cases, she said, should be reported discretely.
She called on the Government to ensure that adequate funding is available for the relevant departments.
Ambassador for the European Union Delegation, Mr. Jamej Videtic, said that child abuse can be a challenge to development, hence the need for families to be in collaboration with the non-government organizations and donor agencies in the fight against child abuse.
The gathering was reminded that the rights of the child must be protected by all adults.
