When the Stag Elite League football train makes its first stop at the Tucville ground today, fans can look forward to two potentially heartwarming encounters with two of the teams seeking to build on their first round wins while two others will be hunting points in order to stay relevant even though its early days yet.
On Saturday last at the #5 ground West Coast Berbice, home team Monedderlust sprung the biggest surprise of the tournament yet when they slayed the mighty Guyana Defence Force 3-2 coming from behind.
Fruta Conquerors were pushed to the hilt but were able to stave off Buxton United by the lone goal of the match which came in the dying stages of the clash.
Teams would have revisited their respective strategies and will be seeking improved performances in every area as this attractive league motors on. At stake is some 15-million dollars.
Conquerors goal scorer Eon Alleyne will be fancying his chances of increasing his tally today and with home advantage in their favour, Monedderlust will have to find ways of keeping him at bay.
Goalkeeper Alex Murray will be aiming for another clean sheet against the Berbice side which is being coached by Gordon Braithwaite but from what they would have displayed against the GDF in terms of their speed and endurance, Conquerors’ main tactician Calvin Allen (Head Coach) will have to devise ways of nullifying the Berbicians.
Apart from Alleyne and Murray, younger brother of former national Andrew Murray, Dillion Williams, Jermaine Junor, Chavez Hescott and Captain Trevon Lythcott will have to combine efforts to carve out a win.
Monnedderlust will look to their goal scoring trio of Kevin Sullivan, Captain Travis Henry and Kevin Cottoy to shape another memorable win for them. Also lending support will be Kevin Layne Jnr., Kimba Braithwaite, Delbert Wilson, Kelvin Joseph and custodian Alwin Mc Donald.
The opening match-up at 6:00pm between GDF and Buxton will be intense as both teams will be going all out to get on the points sheet. The GDF looked solid in the first half hour against Monedderlust but as the game matured, the Army boys faded and were not playing as a cohesive unit, succumbing to the speed and constant challenges from Monnedderlust.
They {GDF} will however hope to correct that failing very early in the SEL and today’s game will tell how much work has been put in, in that regard. Captain Selwyn Isaacs marshalling the defence will have to step it up a few notches as Buxton’s main strike force; Clive Andries will be a constant bother.
Isaacs will find able assistance from his man between the uprights, Oswald Cornette, Delwin Fraser, Tyrone Lewis, Delroy Fraser, Desford Williams and Eusi Phillips.
Buxton United’s challenge for a win will centre around Andries, Jason Cromwell in goal, Dillion Wright, Fitzroy McLean, Esan Hamer, Jeremiah Thorne and Denver Dennis among others.
Another enthralling evening of football awaits the fans.
