Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjatan has said that he would welcome the Australian Government’s offer to share information on how it dealt with issues related to border security.
The issue was among several other security-related matters discussed yesterday when Minister Ramjattan hosted Australian High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr. Ross Tysoe during a courtesy call.
Mr. Tysoe arrived in Guyana yesterday to conduct bilateral meetings with several Government officials.
His visit ends tomorrow.
Mr. Tysoe is a Senior Career Officer at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Based in Trinidad and Tobago, he also holds accreditation as Australian High Commissioner to CARICOM.
At the meeting with Minister Ramjattan, the discussions focused on issues such as the treatment of refugees, border security, deportation, gun amnesties, territorial sovereignty and potential for economic development.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Public Security, the two men shared current practices and experiences in Guyana and Australia, respectively.
Discussions then ensued with regard to areas where improvement and assistance was needed in Guyana and possible solutions which could be utilised.
“The Australian High Commissioner offered to share with the Government of Guyana information on how the Australian Government dealt with certain issues related to border security, which the Hon. Minister stated would be most welcomed,” the ministry’s statement said.
Ramjattan expressed his appreciation to the Australian High Commissioner for his visit and the parties agreed to maintain communication with the prospect of collaboration in the future.
The Ministry of Public Security said it will continue to work together with international partners to seek areas of collaboration that will enhance the effectiveness of the Security Sector in Guyana and maintain the safety and security of the country’s citizenry.
