Region Ten once again is in the limelight in academics. Corwyn Bruce, 20, of Kwakwani Water Front Road graduated, recently, with a distinction in the Certificate in Agriculture at the Guyana School of Agriculture.
According to Bruce who grew up in a single parent home, it was a challenge at first but he overcame all obstacles. Bruce said, “My mother died when I was in the first term in High School; my father provided for my sister and me. He works with Rusal Mining Company as an operator and it was very hard and still is for him but he manages.”
“My dad had to support me in GSA and my little sister at Central High School. Then he had to pay for her 12 subjects at CSEC. She got seven Grade Ones and five Grade twos. He is very proud of us.”
The future agronomist said he would like to go to the University of Guyana to read for his degree but because his father is paying for his sister he will have to wait until his sister graduates in three years. “I am hoping to get a scholarship to go to UG because I can’t go now; my father can’t afford to pay for both of us.”
Bruce said that he met challenges in GSA but with determination and encouragement from his father he persevered and overcame them. “I had to do subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology which I never did before but I learned them. Thank God I got through. I am the only one who graduated with a distinction in the certificate course.”
Bruce said he works part time with the Upper Berbice Forestry and Agriculture Producers’ Association and they assisted with his tuition fees while he was at GSA. He said that he needs a proper job to assist his father financially.
“I help him around the house and I bought some seeds and plant so we could have a little kitchen garden and I fixed the fence but I want to do more.”
