They were taking advantage of the gun amnesty recently implemented by the Ministry of Public Security.
Last Thursday, Alex Croal ,46, of Lot 604 Wismar Linden and Eustace Wilson,50, of One Mile, Linden were on their way to the Mahdia Police Station, to hand over a quantity of ammunition, when they were intercepted by police.
The Linders, who declared the ammunition to the police were later arrested and charged for illegal ammunition possession.
Croal, a father of seven and Wilson, a father of three, faced City Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday and were released on self bail for the offence.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 17, at Konawaruk, they had one hundred and fifty .32 rounds of ammunition, 109mm rounds of ammunition, fourteen 12 gauge cartridges, among other ammunition in their possession when they were not holders of a firearm licence.
Both were instructed to return to court on October 20, at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for continuation.
Attorney, Clyde Forde, who represented the defendants, requested that they be released on reasonable bail. He reported that his clients have no antecedents and pose no risk of flight.
The Attorney attested that on the day in question, his clients were going to the nearest police station to hand over the illegal items, which were given to them by their employer.
He explained that Croal and Wilson were stopped on Mahdia Road by the police. The Attorney added that his clients declared the ammunition to the police, who escorted them to the station and instituted the charge.
Forde asked the court to exercise leniency citing the fact that his clients were at the time taking advantage of the gun amnesty period. Further, Forde contended that the Prosecution’s facts will hold up his bail application.
The police facts certainly supported what the lawyer put forward. When Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones presented the facts of the matter, he said that the police intercepted the defendants on Black Water trail.
He added that Wilson, who was in the company of Croal, had the ammunition in his possession concealed in a haversack. The Prosecutor added that Wilson informed the police that he was going to the station to hand over the rounds and they were later arrested and charged.
