If this wasn’t such a tenth rate (may even more) society where its inhabitants appear more like clowns than humans going about their daily business, there would have been global focus on Guyana with the production of books many of which would have made the New York Times best selling lists.
Since the international cricket icon Chris Gayle spoke of wanting to feel the pitch of a female sports journalist, I have been trying to identify where on her body is her pitch.
I did a column on what Gayle said and still no women’s group in Guyana came forward either to denounce Gayle or at least to point this columnist to where on her body you can find her pitch. I am curious to know.
And why not? I am a media operative engaged in daily journalistic investigation so I would like to know where on the body you can find a woman’s pitch if there is such a part of a woman’s anatomy. Chris Gayle seems to think so.
To rewind the tape a little, Gayle was at a press conference in Antigua and the journalist asked him how the pitch feels and he told her he doesn’t know since he hasn’t felt her pitch as yet. Guyana has some aggressive middle class women’s groups but they stayed silent. At least in Guyana the mystery of where a woman’s pitch is located continues.
If you Google the incident you will see what Naipaul meant when he was so brutally condescending to the English-speaking Caribbean for over three decades. The Google search would show only Antiguan women’s groups denounced Gayle.
In the Caribbean there was silence when a sitting Head of Government in Guyana was accused of shocking mistreatment of his wife. President Jagdeo had led the nation to believe that he was legally married to Varshnie Singh. For years the media refered to her as Mrs. Jagdeo. In a press conference that was unusual anywhere in the world in the 20th century onwards, Ms. Singh told the world that President Jagdeo refused to sign papers to make the union legal and she endured horrible mistreatment at his hands. Not one Caricom Prime Minister even gave off a whisper of concern.
The white man who is forever demonized in the non-white world because he colonized us would never have tolerated that. I studied for my higher degrees in Canada and I can say this with emotional precision – the Jagdeo/Singh controversy would have resulted in the immediate end of the Canadian Prime Minister’s career.
Bill Clinton was metaphorically crucified up over the Monica Lewinsky affair. Over in Italy, Berlusconi lost power over his depraved escapades. But is Jagdeo the only one in the Caribbean that our women groups are reticent about? There have been allegations and accusations from six women against St. Vincent Prime Minister, Ralph Gonsalves.
Are all the accusations based on lies and deceit by these women? It is my right to decide if I believe there are credible accusations against Gonsalves. I don’t believe that all six women are lying.
Back in Guyana, the land of silence and cowardice, a Minister is involved in a huge brawl with his wife. It ended in the wife’s death and his hospitalization. The wife’s death was ruled as suicide. Our women groups have never demanded an investigation. Is it within the right of a citizen to query whether it was a suicide? Will we ever know?
The same policemen that carried out the investigation are the same policemen that are on the job. Can we expect the new government to open up the inquiry? The society was never given an explanation as to how the woman took her life. Surely such a high profile case needs reopening. Will that happen? I doubt it.
A man, literally without financial resources to employ a lawyer when he was arrested and charged for murder, is supposed to have killed a high profile dissenter, Courtney Crum- Ewing during the reign of the Jagdeo/Ramotar cabal. The talk among people is that he is the alleged hit man.
Every school boy in this county knows that there is a white-collar planner in the assassination of Crum Ewing. But no deal has been made with the alleged hit man so that an inquiry could begin into the intellectual author. I spoke at the Congress Place wake for Crum Ewing. The featured speaker was the current Attorney-General. If the government is not interested in the office planner of the assassination why would it be interested in knowing if the minister’s wife was murdered?
