The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were without heavy artillery for their battle with Malteenoes who enjoyed home advantage but when the dust had settled at the MSC ground yesterday in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Carib Beer t20 first division cricket tournament, the soldiers had emerged victorious by 24 runs.
GDF opted to bat on a two-paced track which kept low and led by an unbeaten 38 with three fours and a six from Kevin Ramdeen, who shared a 48-run stand with fellow Berbician Neil Smith (21) spearheaded the Army to 135-6 from 20 overs.
Deon Ferrier who strangely did not bowl his full quota of fours, captured 2-11 in a frugal three-over spell for Malteenoes who, needing to get 32 from the last two overs with four wickets in hand were 112-6 when their overs expired despite a determined 42 from Skipper Steven Jacobs.
Pacer Harris removed Jacobs in the 12th over to finish with 3-33 and got excellent support from Smith (2-19), who got rid of Steven Sankar (1) and the potentially dangerous Lennox Cush (18) off consecutive delivers in the 20th over while quickie Gilford Moore, who played five First-Class matches for CCC, finished with 2-17.
GDF lost Randy Lindore for a duck at 2-1 when Kellon Carmichael, who last week returned from a successful season in England, trapped him LBW.
Hakeem Hinds (11) and left-handed opener Leon Andrews (25) took the score to 37 before Deon Ferrier in his first game for MSC in two years, bowled Hinds in his first over when he missed an ambitious pull at one that kept low.
Ferrier, one of three players in the MSC side who represented Guyana in the Stanford t20 tournament, also bowled Andrews at 51-3 to give the hosts the ascendancy.
Andrews’ demise was timely since he was just beginning to flow with a straight six off pacer Cordell Mars and another one off Jacobs which landed on the roof of the Tutorial High School but Ramdeen and Smith launched ‘operation re-build’ with their entertaining partnership before Smith missed a reckless reverse sweep and was LBW to Cush (another former Guyana t20 player) to leave the score on 99-4.
Nine runs later Romario Sheppard (9) was neatly stumped from a leg-side wide off Jacobs by the versatile Carmichael (who shared the keeping duties with Imran Hassan) and although Ramdeen remained to the end, 135 was a very gettable target.
Moore started with three wides before his first ball on the stumps disturbed Troy Lewis’s wicket before he had scored, while Hassan (6) was brilliantly taken at cover by Lindore as Moore stuck again at 16-2.
Ferrier and Jacobs, who dominated the partnership with some attractive shots including a six off left-arm spinner Ravi Persaud and another off Harris. Ferreira (12) swiveled and hooked Sheppard for six before he was taken at mid-on as Sheppard had the last laugh.
Cush smashed Harris over wide long-off for six but struggled to get the ball away on the ‘dodgy track’ while Harris removed Orin Ford (the third former National t20 player in the side) for a duck and Carmichael (2) in quick succession.
Kareem Naughton (11) hit Moore for six to lift MSC’s hopes of a dramatic finish but when he was run out in the penultimate over, MSC needed 28 to get from the last over.
Sankar was removed off the second ball, while Cush was bowled off the next delivery as Smith just conceded four from the final over and picked up two wickets.
