Charlotte Agatha Campbell, well known as ‘Mammy Gathie’ is arguably the oldest resident of Christianburg, Wismar, Linden.
The woman celebrated her 104th birthday yesterday. She was pampered and treated by friends and relatives at her Stewart Path home.
Among those dropping in for the special day was executive member of the Women of Mission, Wanda Richmond, who, along with other members of the organization, treated the old girl to a late breakfast of fruit and her favourite beverage – Malta.
Mammy Gathie was born at Dalgin, Demerara River, but moved to Linden with her children in 1970, following the accidental death of her husband, Leonard, the previous year.
She was also involved in the accident that killed her husband. She survived.
A niece had however confided in an earlier interview that trauma to Mammy Gathie’s head resulted in her having periodic memory lapses. These never stopped her from living a full life. Mammy Gathie was known to tend to her garden and take care of her personal hygiene right up to, and after her 100th birthday.
Today at 104, the centenarian still suffers occasional memory lapses, but leads a healthy life, with no major complications.
Smiling radiantly yesterday she declared, “I’m happy and blessed to see this day!” And everyone agreed with her.
Several persons also took the opportunity to congratulate her on achieving the milestone.
She is the mother of four, grandmother of 16 and great grandmother of 20. She is the lone surviving sibling of the 11 children her parents procreated. (Enid Joaquin)
