Dear Editor,
A mature German colleague, in the mid-1950s, told me that Germany once had a class system and when Hitler came to power he “stamped it all out”. When I enquired about his attitude towards people of Jewish descent, she explained that his attitude mainly related to their reluctance to ‘share their money with the wider community, preferring to keep it to themselves. Many years later, I read that that was a philosophy based on their deeply held views that ‘Jewish money’ should be circulated within their community at least 12 times before being released elsewhere. Perhaps it is one of their laws.
When President Amin of Uganda expelled thousands of Asians from that country in the 1970s for more or less the same reason, I thought of Hitler. It happens from time to time. In Donald Trump’s case, it may be a case of boredom. He has stuck his fingers into as many business pies as he fancied, now it is time to taste a political concoction. At least he should have enough money to indulge his fancy. Wait and see.
I found the closing sentence of Mr. Kissoon’s piece particularly intriguing: “…….after 82 years since Hitler rose to power in 1933 could a politician in the major country of the world in the 21st century enunciate an ideology the kind Hitler embraced?”. Indeed, we are back to the 1930s and have been so for some time now, what with the Wall Street crash, the recession and depression, now the rise of a seeming dictator in the mould of Hitler. Let us be prepared.
America is the power it is today, thanks to (legal) immigrants from various areas of the world over the years, each nation bringing parts and practices of its own culture. I love their ice cream – an Italian ‘importation’ and specialty.
