Following what was expected to be intense rivalry last evening at the Leonora ground, the Stag Elite League train is set to anchor at #5 ground, West Coast Berbice for another double header card today.
The home team, Monedderlust Football Club will lock horns with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in feature play with the opening game bringing together East Demerara’s Buxton United and City side Fruta Conquerors from 18:00hrs.
All the teams have exuded confidence so far with preparation prior to the start being second to none. On show will be a new cadre of footballers for Guyana’s future thrust at the regional and international levels, while the senior players will hope to hold their own while seeking to guide the younger brigade.
The main attraction tonight between Monedderlust and the GDF will be a mouth watering shindig as both sides would be seeking to gain full points in their quest to stake a claim for the big prize in the Genesis segment of the league.
Monedderlust is not known as a major force in the league format of the game but did create a name for them in the knock-out format and will be aiming to graduate to this level which would present bigger challenges, in a positive way.
More playing time will certainly bring out the best in the young and seasoned players barring any serious injuries and it will also be a serious test for the main tacticians, Coaches of all the teams.
Monedderlust Club president, Mr. Clay Flatts in an invited comment said that the Elite League is a most welcome move by his club and it is something they have been waiting for a long time now to really experience continuous competitive football which was lacking.
“I must say that we are excited to be named among some of the best teams in football here in Guyana. As for preparation, I must say that the team has been in training for several months now and is at a stage where we can compete creditably at this level with the aim of becoming the league’s winner.”
Leading the charge for Flatts’ side will be National Under-23 player Kevin Layne Jr. along with Alwin McDonald, Travis Thom Jr., Atlyn Broene, Kelvin Joseph, Kelvin Cotti, Nicholas Rodney and Jumal Joseph.
GDF Vice President of Administration, Mr. Dwaine Moses stated that his charges are, “Well prepared, ready and rearing to go.”
He noted that they have been in preparation mode under the watchful eyes of Head Coach Denzil Thompson for a few months and would have engaged in a few practice games against teams including Monedderlust.
“We have been playing them in warm up matches on quite a few occasions so we know each other fairly well. I think we had adequate time to get in shape and we are looking forward to the challenge that this league will bring.”
Like the other teams, the GDF, a team with Caribbean experience will be featuring young and seasoned players. The young and fresh faces include Odel Williams, Carlos Adams, Akeemo Watts and Nikena Prince who will be guided by the regular faces that include Selwyn Isaacs, Eusi Phillips, the Fraser brothers, Delroy and Delwin along with custodians, Dion Wallace, Oswald Cornette and Richard Croft.
Buxton United and Fruta Conquerors will not be taking each other lightly; Buxton Coach Mr. Herbert McPherson said that he is looking forward to the new challenges of this league and intends to do well as a team. “If we can’t win, we must not lose,” McPherson emphatically stated.
Multi talented athlete and their leading forward, Clive Andries will be at the helm of the Buxton team along with Denver Dennis, two tested, tried and proven players. They will be complimented by Delon Wright (forward) and midfielder Jeremiah Thorne among others.
McPherson complimented the GFF for making this move to introduce an Elite League noting that this kind of competition is needed to lift the morale of the players and the game. The team had two months of concentrated preparations.
The exploits of Fruta Conquerors are well documented in Guyana and they are on a path to restoring pride of the past. This will be an uphill task but Coach Calvin Allen is up to the task with his players and club management fully supportive.
Conquerors would be banking on players the caliber of Delon Williams, Lennox Charles, Jermaine Junor, Trevon Lythcott, Chavez Hescott, Dennis Edwards, Eon Alleyne, Daniel Favourite and the indomitable Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams to deliver the goods for them.
