Yesterday morning West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo was re-contracted, while former West Indies t20 International Christopher Barnwell joined the Digicel family as the two National cricketers were made Digicel Brand Ambassadors at a signing ceremony at Digicel’s Headquarters in Kingston.
The 29-year-old Bishoo was previously contracted as a Digicel Brand Ambassador in 2012 when along four other national sporting personalities the Berbician signed his inaugural contract.
While Bishoo, who has 50 wickets from 13 Test matches since making his debut against Pakistan on home soil in 2011, renewed his ties with the ‘bigger better network’, the 28-year-old Barnwell, who played six t20 Internationals for the West Indies between 2011-2013, became a Digicel Brand Ambassador for the first time.
Advertising Manager Ramesh Rupchand told those present, which included Bishoo’s wife and West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Director Anand Sanasie, that this was the first time that two National cricketers were contracted and welcomed Barnwell, who plays for DCC in the city at Club level, to the Digicel family.
“We have worked with Bishoo already and Barnwell is a big star in Guyana’s cricket. Both players will be mandated to participate in community development projects along with Digicel or come up with initiatives of their own.”
Barnwell and Bishoo both represented the Guyana Franchise in the CPL T20 tournament and were both refreshingly eloquent in their speeches and appropriately dressed for the occasion.
“It is a great pleasure and privilege to be a part of the Digicel family and be afforded the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Barnwell, who has 50 wickets and 1,330 runs including a century from 35 First-Class matches.
Bishoo who along with Rajendra Chandrika are the Guyanese on the West Indies team which will tour Sri Lanka for a two-Test series from October 14, said it felt great to have his contract renewed and to still be a part of the entity which he feels makes a tremendous contribution to sports, not only in Guyana but throughout the Caribbean.
In an invited comment, Sanasie, who is also the Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) said Digicel continues to show their support for sports and sports person and commended the cell phone giants for giving the pair contracts which should be a good investment for the Company.
The GCB executive said that more companies should follow Digicel’s lead in supporting the development of local athletes, while adding that the GCB hopes to have Digicel as the Brand for its school cricket tournament which is scheduled to commence next month in much the same way they are playing a significant role with the Digicel’s school Football tournament.
Also present at the signing ceremony were Digicel’s Senior Sponsorship and Events Executive Louanna Abrams and the company’s Communications Manager, Vidya Bijlall-Sanichara.
