National swimmer Soroya Simmons left Guyana on Friday to take part in the Annual Subway Maracas Open Water Classic this weekend in Trinidad and Tobago.
Simmons, I-CEE Soft Drink Brand Ambassador is sponsored by Banks DIH Limited for the event in the twin island republic.
She is competing for the first time at this level of competition and as part of preparation, the University of Guyana student competed in a 5Km swim in the Essequibo River from the village of River View to Bartica and completed the course in just less than one hour.
Simmons will compete in the 2,650 metres race at the Maracas Water Classic which will bring together swimmers from the Caribbean, North America and Europe.
Banks DIH Limited Soft Drinks Manager Jennifer Khan presented Simmons with her airline ticket during a simple ceremony at Thirst Park on Thursday.
Simmons expressed gratitude to Banks DIH Limited for sponsoring her and expressed confidence in doing well at the event.
Khan encouraged the young swimmer to secure a medal at the prestigious event. Simmons is expected to return to Guyana on Monday.
