A cane cutter is now in a serious but stable condition in the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck down by a car driven by an errant 15-year-old unlicensed driver.
According to information the man Gurdat Keshwar called “Cokes”, a cane harvester of Gangaram Settlement; East Canje Berbice was cycling along the Betsy Ground, Public Road when he was struck down by the motor car PNN 5577. The accident is said to have occurred around 08:30 hrs.
Information revealed that the owner of the car Pooran Rambarrat of Canefield, East Canje had taken the vehicle to a wash bay at Adelphi to be cleaned.
The teen, Gurudat Chisolm, who it is understood works at the said wash bay, took the car and went for a drive towards Gangaram.
He was on his way back and was said to be driving at a fast rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle on the Betsy Ground Public Road and collided with a lamp post before slamming into Rambarrat who was cycling on the road.
It is understood that after Rambarrat saw the speeding car coming at him he went down to the parapet, but was still struck and flung into a drain.
The man was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where it was revealed that his right leg was broken in two places, and that he had lacerations on other parts of his body including his head. He was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The car was badly damaged. The driver remains in custody.
