Somewhere out there is an armed robbery accused, who teamed up with another to break the New Amsterdam prison’s second-floor wall and used bed sheets to climb down to freedom.
On August 12, last, Lennox Patterson, 26, of 369 Sister’s Village, East Bank Berbice, teamed up with another robbery accused, Ravindra Samaroo, to stage a daring escape from the 88-year-old wooden prison facility at Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam.
Samaroo, of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, was captured the next day and has since been charged with escaping from lawful custody. He was captured about two miles from the facility, but one month after the daring escape, lawmen in the Ancient County are still searching for Patterson.
Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday, Head of ‘B’ Division (Ag), Commander Errol Watts said that ranks are still on high alert for the prisoner, even though all search attempts have been fruitless thus far.
“We will get him,” said a confident Watts. He still asked members of the public to assist in any way that they can.
At the time of his recent arrest, Patterson was reportedly busted with a firearm. He was already facing charges on two counts each of Robbery Under Arms and Possession of Firearm and Ammunition.
Patterson was remanded after facing charges at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court late last month. The charges were instituted following a brazen robbery at the M. Ali Supermarket, at Pope and Main Streets, New Amsterdam.
He and accomplices reportedly made off with the owner’s firearm, cash and other items totaling $831,000.
Reports are that the two prisoners were occupying adjoining cells at the Penitentiary Walk facility. That night, the men acted in concert, knocking out a single 7-feet board from the prison’s wooden walls.
Leaving four companions behind, they reportedly squeezed their way through the hole in the wall, and climbed down bed sheets they had lowered. The men managed to scale the facility’s high zinc fence, which has barbed wires on top.
Officials surmised that they made their way across a poorly illuminated farm located behind the prison. By 20:20 that night, the two men were ‘free’.
Police and prison officials were on high alert after the jailbreak as they had cordoned off all access points in the ancient county, and were closely monitoring the town and surrounding areas since the incident.
The lawmen are asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Patterson to contact them on telephone numbers 225- 8196, 225-6411, 333-2191, 333-2151, 911 or the nearest police station.
