Mark Peters, who admitted that he broke into the dwelling house of Susan Haley and stole red female underwear, was yesterday jailed for 12 months after he pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter/simple larceny. Peters, a cook, who resides at Lot 40 DaSilva, Street, Newtown, Georgetown also confessed that he stole a blowdryer, curling iron, six pieces of cloth, a gas bottle, a pair of slippers among other items on September, 7, last, at Carmichael Street, Georgetown.
The convict made his first court appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan earlier this week and pleaded not guilty. Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, told the court that on the day in question, Haley secured her Carmichael Street home and left for a funeral around 13:00hrs.
He added that around 14:00hrs, the police who were on patrol in the area saw Peters leaving the woman’s house. He had a haversack on his back and a gas bottle in his hand.
The Prosecutor pointed out that the man was stopped and questioned by the police. Jones said that Peters told the police he was visiting his aunt, but the police did not believe his story.
As a result the police made contact with Haley, who later arrived at her premises and denied knowing the man. She also confirmed that her home was broken into. This led to the lawmen conducting a search on Peters.
Jones told the court that a quantity of items was found in his possession. This included red female underwear, which was found in his pants pocket.
Haley subsequently identified the items as her belongings which led to Peters being apprehended and charged.
When asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say before sentencing, Peters replied in the negative. After Peters was informed of his prison term he thanked the Magistrate before leaving the courtroom.
According to the Prosecutor, the items have been recovered. Before the matter concluded Magistrate McLennan instructed that the items be returned to Haley.
