Top cricket clubs in Berbice, Tucber Park formerly Bermine, Albion and Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club had easy wins against Edinburgh, Skeldon and Upper Corentyne respectively while the other matches were badly
affected by heavy early morning downpour in the first round of the Bobby Deonarine and Tom Gruntzel sponsored Tenelec Inc round robin fifty overs first division cricket competition.
At Edinburgh, the home team won the toss, batted and made a disappointing 85 all out in 35.1 overs out of the reduced allotment of 46 overs due to rain. Denny David topscored with 34 and Jamal Henry supported with 23. Berbice senior all rounder Eugene LaFleur took 3 for 8 and received support from former national junior players Niall Smith and Joemal LaFleur, who took two wickets apiece. Kevin Pellew also took two wickets and West Indies female all rounder Treymaine Smart who captured a wicket. Tucber Park raced to their revised target of 38 from 8.1 overs of their allotted 20 overs. Romario Shepherd made 23.
At Skeldon, the home team won the toss and batted. They were bundled out for 115 with West Indies leg spinner Devendra Bishoo, who is preparing for the tour to Sri Lanka, finishing with 5 for 29. He received support from former West Indies under-19 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie with 3 for 11 and controversially dropped West Indies left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul 2 for 10. Albion raced to victory losing 3 wickets. National wicketkeeper-batsman Anthony Bramble made 56 not out and Jonathan Foo 35.
Over at Area ‘H’, the home team defeated Upper Corentyne with the scores already published in the press.
The other matches that were affected by rain were all no results. Blairmont won the toss and batted and were 125 for 8 off 37 of their reduced 45 overs when the rains came. National under-19 all rounder Parmanand Ramdhan made 27 and Shabbir Baksh 21. National under-17 all rounder Kevin Sinclair took 3 for 29 off 9 overs.
West Berbice also won the toss and batted first against Bush Lot Rising Star and made 203 for 7 in 38.2 overs of the allotted 40 when the rains came with Keyron Fraser 49 and Ryan Shun 29. Asif Khan took 3 for 37, Troy Mckenzie 2 for 29 and Javed Saywack 2 for 34.
At Cumberland, Port Mourant won the toss against Young Warriors and were well placed at 114 for 2 off 25 of their allotted overs when the downpour washed out the rest of the game with Lloydel Lewis on 42 not out. The second round is set for Saturday.
