The agonizing search for a 35-year-old fisherman ended in pain for his family yesterday when his body was fished out of the Atlantic Ocean, in the vicinity of Suriname.
The dead fisherman has been identified as Ron Kawall, also called “Fat-Bai” of Lot 75 Sideline Dam, Middle Road, La Penitence.
His partially decomposed body was discovered a day after he allegedly hit his head and fell from a fishing boat at a wharf in Suriname. He fell overboard in the vicinity of Paramaribo.
The man’s wife, Elizabeth Deopaul, said that his co-workers informed her that around 01:00 hrs on Sunday they were all taking a drink when her partner attempted to jump from one vessel to another but instead, slipped and hit his head on one of the boats and fell into the water.
A search was immediately launched but his body was only discovered around 06:00 hrs yesterday.
Deopaul recalled that her partner left home on August 25 last to travel to Suriname.
“They would normally go over there (Suriname) and fish and sell the load there and then travel back home,” the woman related.
She stated that last Wednesday, Kawall called and informed her that they had reached in Suriname and already sold off their load. He also told her that he would be home at 11:00 hrs the following day (Thursday).
“On Thursday he called me around 06:00 o’clock and when I see the Suriname number, I asked what he still doing in Suriname and he said that the captain tell him to stay back because they have to go out on sea again,” the woman recalled.
She further explained that on Saturday again, her husband called and informed her that he would be sending money for her with the boat captain the following day.
However, around 06:00hrs on Sunday, Deopaul said that a villager saw her and asked if she heard what had happened.
“I asked him what happened and he said that ‘Fat-Bai’ fall overboard. He said that they went drinking at the wharf (in Suriname). He (Kawall) was on one boat and was about to jump onto another boat and he hit his head and fall overboard,” Deopaul said.
She explained that she was further informed that the other crew members jumped into the water to search for her husband but failed to locate him. “They couldn’t find him. They found his body under the wharf the Sunday morning,” the woman explained.
Ron Kawall’s relatives are pleading with the public to financially assist them to bring his body home so that he could have a funeral.
