A 24-year-old miner, charged with stealing a motorcycle three months ago, was placed on $100,000 bail when he appeared in a city court yesterday.
Lester Hopkinson, of Lot 79 Owen Street, Kitty was taken before Senior Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face the larceny charge.
The court heard that between June 22 and June 23, last, at Alexander Street, Georgetown he stole David Troyer’s Honda Rockus motorcycle (CG7708). The vehicle is said to have cost Troyer $750,000.
According to Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, around 22:00 hours on June 22, last, the owner secured his motorbike, but the next morning, around 10:00 hours, he discovered it missing.
Later, the police on patrol noticed Hopkinson acting in a suspicious manner. When they checked, they reportedly found him with the vehicle. He was arrested and the charge was laid following investigations.
The 24-year-old miner told the court he had not committed the crime. However, according to Hopkinson, he and his sister had left their home to purchase food. The court heard that the duo had stopped at a street stand to make the said purchase when the police approached him.
Hopkinson told the Magistrate that the police told him that he had stolen the Rockus, but he insisted that he did not. The defendant added that the Honda Rockus was parked next to the stand with the handle locked but he did not put it there.
After hearing both sides, the Magistrate granted bail and the matter is set for statements on October 12.
