According to Assistant Coach of the National Men’s Volleyball team Ian Wills, the 12-man team which will represent this country at the Senior South American Indoor Championship in Maceo, Brazil from September 27 to October 5, participated in a rigorous training camp before the final team was named on Sunday last.
The players were selected by Head Coach Levi Nedd along with the selectors to represent Guyana which is at the level one (lowest) in Brazil. The Brazilian national team which is ranked level three (highest) will return for a three-day camp from September 18-20.
According to Wills the Camp was geared to fine tune all the systems learnt over the past weekend in game simulation exercises before the team leaves for Brazil adding that the Guyanese will put their best foot forward as they represent the Golden Arrowhead.
“The training camp which commenced last Friday evening at the national Gymnasium saw the entire 21-man squad comprising players from Demerara and Berbice go through what we (coaches) considered a very rigorous physical and mental weekend culminating with the final selection on Sunday afternoon,” Wills, an Administrator and Coach of Castrol Strikers Volleyball Club, explained.
He informed that during the period between the next encampment of the team, training sessions will continue to be conducted separately in Berbice and Demerara. The Captain will be named when the players return to Camp.
“The Berbicians will be under the guidance of Coach Nedd, who is from that County while I will look after those from Demerara” Wills disclosed.
“While the general idea is to win the tournament in Brazil it like Guyana playing Brazil in Football or Guyana playing Australia in Cricket so we will try to get a many positives out of the trip as possible and gain experience and exposure at that level, the former National Volleyball player added.
“On the developmental level, the one week training course being conducted by International coach, Julio Morales of the USA which is specifically aimed at the development of young players is ongoing and is expected to conclude on tomorrow,” Wills told Kaieteur Sports yesterday.
Meanwhile, as the Guyana Volleyball Federation continues its drive to make the game respected on the world stage, its president, John Flores is scheduled to depart for the South American Congress in Brazil this Thursday.
Among the issues Flores intends to raise at the congress are, promises made by the world governing body FIVB to establish a development center in the Guiana’s which Flores believes Guyana is in the best position to house.
Other matters to be addressed will be the promise made by the regional body CSV to provide coaching assistance through an international coach who will reside in Guyana between six months to one year.
The Guyana team: Quacey Matheson, Jason Seelochand, Ian Baggot, Trevlon Mc Rae, Shemroy Ross, Samuel Fraser, Khemraj Singh, Creston Rodney, Vance Harding, Cleveland Peters and Wendell Austin.
