Two years after a tragic accident claimed the life of 29- year–old Asif Iqbal Hussain, his aggrieved relatives are seeking the assistance of the police to have a fresh investigation launched into the incident. The budding aeronautical engineer was the victim of a car accident, which occurred at Crane Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on September 6, 2013.
The vehicle slammed into a utility pole. Hussain was one of three passengers when it crashed.
He was reportedly found in the passenger side of the vehicle. Two others were also found in the damaged vehicle. Hussain was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH). The other passengers were treated at the Woodlands Hospital.
No one was charged. However, relatives of the deceased have expressed their dissatisfaction with the initial police investigation.
On the second death anniversary, Hussain’s relatives are still on a quest to have an adequate police investigation launched into the accident.
They are claiming that they were treated badly by the police, during th
e initial investigation. As such, the family wants the case reopened.
One member of the family, who spoke with Kaieteur News over the weekend, recalled that Hussain had purchased the car, seven days before the accident. The relative is holding to the belief that someone should be held accountable for Hussain’s death.
“He went out with his friends but we are convinced that he was not driving. The car had the most damage on the passenger’s side and that was the side he was on. That’s the reason he had the most injuries and died.” She recounted that the family was not even notified of the death until 48 hours had expired.
“That alone shows that the police were not doing their job,” she added. The woman noted that some time after the accident she went to check on the status of the investigation but police claimed that they had not gathered sufficient evidence to charge anyone.
“I will always remember the officer, (name given) who told me ‘a dead man tells no tale,’” the distraught woman lamented.
She believes that with the right attitude the investigation would have turned out better.
“My family is still distressed over the incident. We want our wounds to heal and we want closure but the police have offered us nothing.”
The family is hopeful that under the new administration something can be done to the case. “And so we are calling on the relevant law enforcement bodies for assistance.”
Kaieteur News understands that the Hussain clan has been in constant contact with some of the persons who witnessed the accident. Some of these persons had given statements to the police.
“All we want is justice; it’s been two years and we just feel more can be done to solve this case,” the woman stressed.
