Most people at her age would enjoy spending the later part of their lives among their loved ones. But for 63-year-old Yvonne Collins, called ‘Steel Donkey’, 18 months of her freedom have been snatched away, since she will be spending them behind bars.
The West Ruimveldt vendor was sent to prison yesterday by City Magistrate Judy Latchman after she was found guilty of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Crystal Fletchman with intent to maim, disable, disfigure or to cause her actual bodily harm, on July 18, last, at West Ruimveldt.
Collins inflicted a gaping hole in the woman’s face with a broken bottle. When her trial concluded in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, the Magistrate found that there was sufficient evidence to tie Collins to the crime.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Kerry Bostwick, called a number of witnesses to testify during the trial. This included the victim, Crystal Fletchman.
According to court facts, on the day in question, Fletchman was standing in Collins’ yard awaiting a taxi. Collins approached Fletchman and inquired from her about the use of a toilet on the premises. Fletchman refused to answer and Collins became annoyed. Collins then broke a bottle and stabbed Fletchman in her face, resulting in a gaping wound.
The incident was reported to the police. Investigations were carried out and Collins was arrested and charged for the offence.
At the convict’s first court appearance on July 21, she denied the charge and was remanded to prison. She remained on remand throughout her trial.
