A fine spell of bowling from veteran left arm spinner Rondhall Lewis spearheaded Rose Hall Town Bakewell ‘A’ to a nine-wicket victory over West Berbice in the final of the inaugural Assuria Insurance / Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club 5-over knockout tournament which was contested on Sunday at the Area ‘H’ ground.
Lewis captured three wickets for three runs as West Berbice who drew the bye to the final, were restricted to 49-3 from the allotted overs after they were inserted in front of a large crowd.
Openers Keith Fraser (18) and Andrew Dutchin (21) added 44 in four overs before Lewis who delivered the final over put the brakes on the scoring.
In reply, Vidal Crandon and Khemraj Mahadeo featured in a first wicket stand of 32 to put their team on course before Mahadeo was run out for 16. However, Crandon who remained unbeaten on 26 and Delbert Kicks (06*) saw their team home with five balls to spare, ending on 50-1.
Rose Hall Town Bakewell ‘A’ defeated No. 48 by eleven runs in the lone semifinal. Rose Hall Town scored 52-2 off their allotted overs, batting first.
Mahadeo struck 33 not out (4×4, 2×6). No. 48 responded with 41-3. B. Persaud scored 15; Erva Giddings claimed 2-10.
Earlier, Rose Hall Town Bakewell A overcame Kennard Memorial by 11 runs, Police Cricket Club beat Rose Hall Town Bakewell ‘B’ by 24 runs, No. 48 got the better of Belvedere by 16 runs, West Berbice trounced All Youths Cricket Club by 18 runs, Tamarind Roots upset Courtland Cricket Club by eight runs, West Berbice thumped Tamarind Root Cricket Club by 10 runs and No. 48 defeated Police by nine wickets. Lewis (5) collected the accolades for being adjudged the man of the match in the final, the tournament’s leading wicket taker and the best individual bowling performance. Keith Fraser (65) was the best batsman while Police opener Philbert Wilburg notched up the highest individual score (36 not out).
No. 48 Cricket Club received $20,000.00 and a trophy for the finishing third, West Berbice took home $30,000.00 and a trophy while Rose Hall Town Bakewell A pocketed $70,000.00 and a trophy.
At the presentation ceremony, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster expressed gratitude to the Management of Assuria Insurance for their sponsorship.
He singled out General Manager Yogindra Arjune and Branch Manager Julieann Fraser for special mention and stated that the tournament was organised under the club’s ‘Say No to Crime and Say Yes to Sports’ Programme. Foster disclosed that the club will continue to organise such tournaments.
In an invited comment, Berbice Branch Manager Fraser said she was satisfied with the standard of the competition and the coverage provided.
The tournament was organised as part of the 45th Anniversary Celebrations of Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club.
