Dear Editor,
It is perhaps harsh to diagnose Minister Ramjattan, after only four months in his position with the same affliction of his predecessor-DENIAL. However, Mr. Ramjattan exhibits the same symptoms as ex-Minister Rohee regarding the crime situation. Minister Ramjattan, like Rohee saw, “a dramatic decline in the crime situation” and that the crimes are being solved (Sunday Chronicle, September 7, 2015). In another newspaper, Ramjattan, Roheeesque, blamed the media for exaggerating the crime situation.
The police statistics are by no means a reliable way to judge criminal activities. Readers may recall the numerous kudos to the police force, citing a drop in sexual assaults, drunk driving, speeding and the list goes on and on. Yet, those of us living in the real world know that they are all delusional.
The majority of crimes are not reported because citizens have no confidence that justice will prevail.
Earlier this year, after an armed robbery at my business place, my staff and I were invited to the police station for an identification parade. Each of us indicated to the police immediately after and in written statements subsequently that none of the suspects committed the crime. Imagine our surprise that we were summoned to give evidence against one of those persons.
With that kind of police work wouldn’t each of the victims of that robbery be justified not to report any other incident to the police?
An innocent man held for more than six months is on trial and the police wasted numerous man hours of theirs and my team with the parade and statements and visits to the police station.
So, when Minister Ramjattan concludes that there is a “dramatic decline in crime” his head is in the clouds at a dizzying height which will require medical help. He should look and reach below him before he suffers the same fate of Mr. Rohee five years from now.
