Basin Football Club (BFC) successfully defended their male title on Saturday August 29 in a nail biting final of the North Rupununi Football Association division-one championships witnessed by a capacity crowd at the Annai Sports ground.
In a fast paced physical encounter against a determined Kwatamang outfit, BFC left it late, before sealing the game in extra time, hitting the network in a tough clash in the 90+27 minute.
A long range free kick from the centre of the field was not taken cleanly by the Kwatamang goalkeeper and the rebound was pounced upon by BFC midfielder Royston Hamilton who calmly slotted home to seal the game just when the match seemed to be headed to the dreaded penalty kicks.
Kwatamang up to that point had defended resolutely and attacked with purpose but poor work in the attacking third cost them dearly with a number of chances missed.
In the female championship match, Annai United were not in no mood to give up their title as a Jillian Hawker strike from just within the 18 yard box sealed the deal in a high quality match played in blazing sunshine.
The tournament dark horse Surama F.C who came into the match trying to derail Annai United’s quest for a third championship in four years responded to the early goal with a number of quick counterattacks and some blistering shots which saw the Annai custodian being called into action on a number of occasions, effecting a number of brilliant saves.
But it was all in vain as the home team managed to hold on until the final whistle to cement its legacy as arguably the best female team in the 15 year history of the championship.
The tournament which culminated an exciting two months of football saw the participation of eight male clubs and five female clubs from the North Rupununi.
Sponsors for the tournament included the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, Woodpecker Sports Store, the Regional Democratic Council Region 9, D&D Supermarket and football enthusiast Mike Williams.
In addition the Officer in Charge of the Annai Police Station contributed monetary incentives and a quantity of sports gear.
The official presentation of trophies, cash prizes and individual incentives will be done on Friday during the annual North Rupununi Amerindian District Heritage celebrations to be held at Rupertee Village.
