One thing is certain, one of the pre-tournament favourites will definitely make it to the final of the inaugural GT Beer / Petra Organisation Futsal Competition by virtue of their semi-final meeting which will occur tomorrow evening, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Sparta Boss and West Front Road are set to engage each other in one semi-final, while Bent Street and Festival City square off in the other and both encounters are anticipated to be intensely fought as they battle to reach the championship round.
In quarter-finals action on Sunday evening, before a large crowd, Sparta Boss and West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ survived two bruising affairs against Kitty Weavers and West Back Road respectively to set up the dream match with the winner guaranteed a final spot.
The most impressive performances of the night came from the other two semi-finalists Bent Street that subjected the previously efficient Sophia unit to a comprehensive shallacking, while Festival City looked equally devastating in their demolition of Albouystown.
Before what was undoubtedly the largest turnout of the tournament, Bent Street led by the sharp shooting O’Kenie Fraser, who lashed in four goals to go with a hat-trick each from Colin Nelson and Amos Ramsay, proved too strong for a game, but evidently outgunned Sophia side that was missing the experienced Sheik Kamal.
Also displaying ripping form was Stelloin David, whose mesmerising skill was too much for the opposition to handle and he booted a brace in the win. Sophia’s leading marksman Dwayne Lowe tried desperately to keep them in the game, but his four-goal effort and a solitary strike from Omallo Williams was insufficient to stop the rampaging Bent Street juggernauts from progressing.
In the second game, it took some brave counterattacking by Randolph Wagner and company to hand West Back Road victory over a resolute West Back Road side. Apart from Wagner’s brace, Hubert Pedro supported with a double as well, while Michael Oie added the other goal.
Tean Caesar with a pair and Josiah Charles a single strike completed West Back Road’s tally. The most exciting game of the night involved Sparta Boss and Kitty Weavers and it took a Travis Grant shot that squeezed past the goalkeeper on the near post following a corner three minutes into extra time to separate the teams after regulation time failed to break a 5-5 deadlock.
Sparta Boss seemed to be coasting to a win, before Sherwin Vincent’s four-goal spree sent the packed arena into joyful celebrations if you were a Weavers supporter and anxious mode as a Sparta Boss fan.
In the end, the experienced Grant settled the nerves of their supporters when he netted the important goal to put them in contention for a prize. Earlier, a brace from the consistent Denis Edwards had appeared as though Sparta Boss was well on their way to securing a comfortable win until Vincent’s heroics.
Eon Alleyne and Solomon Austin continued their rampage with a pair of goals each as Festival City made light work of Albouystown. Devon Dooker’s brace was the only highlight of Albouystown effort.
