Amid public outcry over the “super salary” of one public servant, Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson has stated that the salary for the post of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) will be reviewed.
During the budget debates last month, Patterson revealed that under the former People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration, the company’s former CEO, Bharat Dindyal, was paid an annual salary of over $73 million.
The former CEO pocketed $3.8M in basic salary, $875,000 in monthly gratuity, $500,000 for accommodation, security allowance at $525,000, leave passage at $210,000, and medical allowance at $210,000.
This took the former CEO’s monthly salary to a staggering $6.1M and annual earnings to $74.3M. Since, Guyanese at large have expressed shock, questioning just what could have made Dindyal earn that much.
The contract for the former GPL top man was not renewed after it was discovered that the previous contract had expired since December 2014 and he was working at the behest of former Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds. They reportedly had a verbal agreement for a six-month extension on the contract.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, Patterson, who has ministerial oversight for the electricity sector, said that despite investigations he has found no evidence to support the reason for such a salary. He said the excuse was provided to him that it is that which is paid in another Caribbean nation for such a position, but he found that it was “a total fabrication.”
“All salaries will have to be rooted in some sort of reality in the conditions we have.” Patterson is of the view that the salary was a special deal with the former CEO and PPP/C government.
Additionally, the Minister told members of the media during a press conference at his Wight’s Lane Office yesterday that the interim CEO, Collin Welch is earning the salary of the post he originally held (Deputy CEO).
