Wiltshire loses in quarterfinals in Squash competition
Linden’s sprint ace, Compton Ceasar finished seventh on Sunday in the finals of the 100m in Samoa, at the Commonwealth Youth Games with a time of 10.70 seconds. Ceasar had entered the finals with a personal best time of 10.60 seconds in the first round.
According to reports, Ceasar entered the Boys 100m Preliminary Heat after he survived a hamstring injury as a result of someone walking into his path during training.
He entered with his time of 11.75 seconds and ran in the first of four Heats, placing third.
His third place was done in the personal best 10.60 seconds. He then placed fourth in the semi-finals in 10.72 seconds less than two hours later, before returning for the finals where he was seventh. The Guyanese up-and-coming sprint ace continued in the 200m yesterday and placed second in his heat.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s other representative athlete, Natricia Hooper ran in the first of three Heats of the Girls 400m also on Sunday.
She entered with a time of 55.04 seconds and placed fourth with the time of 57.04 seconds, missing qualification for the finals.
In Squash where Guyana is also participating, Larissa Wiltshire played her first match in the Round- of-16 against Ellie McVeigh of Northern Ireland. According to reports, she was a bit nervous at the beginning, but made some adjustments to go on to win the game.
Wiltshire exploited her opponent’s weaknesses and did a great job of seizing the opportunities which were presented to her. She beat McVeigh 9-11, 11-9, 3-11, 11-6 and 11-2). However, Wiltshire lost 3-0 in the quarterfinals later in the day to the number one seed from Malaysia, Siva Subramaniam.
Wiltshire finished ranked fifth to eight and played in the Girls’ Doubles competition yesterday with team-mate, Taylor Fernandes against Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Mekdeci played Israr Ahmad of Pakistan, who is ranked third to fourth in the tournament and one of the top ten juniors in the world.
Mekdeci reportedly started his match well, but eventually lost 11-6, 11-2 and 11-0. Mekdeci played for ninth place yesterday.
