Many would dare not deny that the nursing profession is a most noble one. The late hours of working and duties are endless. It requires the nurse to be the doctor’s other hand.
But scores of these hardworking public servants have complained bitterly over the years about receiving little thanks for the job they do daily with dedication and have even protested for improvements in their field.
Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton, intends to change all of this. He said that his government will make nursing “once more an attractive and well paid profession.”
Dr. Norton said that the coalition government is committed to implementing a system in which Health Education can be taught at a restructured university level with quality staff, proper infrastructure, adequate facilities including modernized library with Information Technology to the benefit of nurses and other health officials.
He said that the APNU+AFC administration finds this to be a most imperative change as there is a need in the health sector for 1,700 registered nurses. There are only 600 to date.
The Public Health Minister said that in his first meeting with the nurses at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, there were 50 valid complaints in the first half hour mostly about poor working conditions and job dissatisfaction.
Noting that this was disheartening to say the least, he vowed that he will do all that is necessary to better the working conditions for Guyana’s nurses, giving them more benefits and incentives thus making them into a happy work force.
The Minister said that plans are already a foot to have a day-care centre at the Georgetown Public Hospital and a canteen facility of the highest quality.
He said that already, the gym is in full function.
“I do agree with the past minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, in training and retaining a wide range of health care professionals for the public health system…I can assure that this will be done,” said the Public Health Minister.
He said, too, that his ministry will provide a forum for discussion and invite the Community Support Officers of the People’s Progressive Party “to join in and be exposed to real training to get a real job and to work for a real salary.”
