People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Clement Rohee, on Monday told the press of his failed efforts to get wider coverage in the period since his Party demitted office. He was hosting his weekly press conference at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown.
Rohee said that the party analyzed the period from June 6 to August 19.
He said that during that period, the PPP issued 30 press statements which were sent to the Editors of the Guyana Chronicle, the Stabroek News, the Kaieteur News and the Guyana Times.
Rohee then pointed out that of the 30 releases issued, Guyana Times carried 19, Chronicle carried 10, Kaieteur News carried eight and the Stabroek News carried seven.
The General Secretary said that the party has since written to the Editors of the Kaieteur News, Stabroek News and Guyana Chronicle “in respect to their unfair, unbalanced and discriminatory coverage of the Party’s Press Statements/Releases which demonstrates a clear pattern of biased editorial policy against the PPP.”
“However, since the editorial policy of these newspaper is clearly aimed at sheltering the Granger-led coalition Government they will obviously refrain from carrying PPP Press Releases, and Statements using an excuse that coverage of party releases and statements depends on importance and content,” said Rohee.
He continued, “The PPP rejects this catch-all statement as an excuse for not carrying PPP releases and statements.”
It must be noted that the editor’s judgment and overall editorial polices govern most newsroom.
If the content of a press statement contradicts newsroom polices, the statement just would not be carried. Kaieteur News, for example, has taken a stand to stay away from publishing anything that can incite racial division.
In addition, a newspaper is governed by what it finds important. A political statement may not necessarily make the cut, Adam Harris, said. Harris is the Editor-in-Chief of Kaieteur News.
