Four days after he allegedly went berserk and knifed a sleeping man to death, 19-year-old Christopher Stanley was yesterday hauled before a City Magistrate to face a murder charge.
Stanley told Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan that he cannot remember his address. He was charged with the murder of Owen Browne, which occurred on Saturday last, at Rosemary Lane (Tiger Bay).
The accused, who had no legal representation, was not required to plead to the charge.
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones, presented the prosecution’s case and did not relate the facts about what transpired on the day in question, to the court.
Jones said that the police file is still incomplete. He added that the murder weapon was sent for analysis. As a result he requested a two-week adjournment which was granted.
The accused will make his next court appearance on September 15, when he will face Magistrate Judy Latchman. During the brief court hearing, Stanley appeared baffled. On several occasions the Magistrate was heard repeating simple questions to him.
When the Magistrate requested that he provide the court with his age, he took a while to answer. He even took a few minutes to respond when he was asked to give his address. The accused eventually told the court he cannot recall where he lives. He was eventually remanded.
After the court session ended loud noise erupted from the court room. A group of women, presumably relatives and friends of the dead man were asked to keep silent by the court orderly. They later left the courtroom and continued their tirade in the court compound. But the drama did not last long, as they were ordered to exit the compound by a senior police official.
According to reports, Owen received 19 stab wounds about his body, last Saturday, after he was reportedly attacked by Stanley, who is said to be of unsound mind.
According to reports, Owen was attacked while sleeping. He was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead.
Kaieteur News understands that Stanley began “acting strange” a few days prior to the incident and was seen sharpening a knife.
