The Guyana Sugar Corporation has launched an investigation into the death of Mohamed Iftekar Oosman, called “Amin,”.
The man was pinned in a canal after a bell loader he was operating overturned.
Oosman, who is also a taxi driver, lived with his father Mohamed Zainool Oosman, his mother Zamenee Oosman, a brother and sister, his wife Sabina Oosman and two children at their home.
His distraught mother said that her son, the eldest of her three children, left home at approximately 16:00 hrs on Monday for his normal days’ work. He worked the 16:30 to 04:30 shift.
The woman said that from what she understands, her son, who was operating a bell loader, was crossing a canal over a makeshift bridge. Three other bell loaders had already crossed, when the bridge gave way.
The vehicle toppled into the canal and pinned Oosman beneath.
The woman said that she received the news from her brother who also works in the area. She immediately left for the back dam, but by then a Land Rover was taking her son to hospital.
Her son was pronounced dead on arrival, she said.
Some of Oosman’s colleagues stated the vehicles were crossing from a dam to the field. After the three other vehicles had crossed, they noticed someone flashing a light on the dam. They then realized the machine had fallen into the trench. Some of the men reportedly plunged overboard in a desperate attempt to save Oosman, but the machine had pinned him below the water.
Some of the men then used a tractor to hoist the bell loader off Oosman, but by then he was already dead.
A post, mortem examination is expected to be conducted shortly. Oosman is survived by two children aged three and one.
Rose Hall Estate Human Resource Manager Adesh Singh told Kaieteur News that Orin Morris, a representative from the Health and Safety Department, visited the site yesterday to conduct investigations on what might have caused the mishap.
Morris also met with the family of the victim.
