Dear Editor,
I am a licensed nurse. I was a Union Representative hence, loyal to my employer as well as my colleagues. I am a patriotic Guyanese.
It is no small wonder therefore, that I am saddened and, more so, appalled at the course of events relative to the termination of the Acting Director of Nursing.
I hold no brief for this employee. I do not know her. I do not wish to know her; I do not wish to know the C.E.O/ Administrator either. The nation needs to know whether this CEO/Administrator used an informed and unbiased approach to make his decision.
However if what is reported in the media is correct, to wit
(1) This Acting Nursing Director is guilty of rotating and/or transferring willy-nilly, nurses within her department, unmindful of the fact that certain sensitive units need very competent nurses to man them e.g. ICU. Is it True or False?
(2) This Acting Director is guilty of insubordination to the CEO.
I would like the CEO to be precise. This term can conveniently have a wide accusatory scope.
It is quite palpable that this top Manager is giving professionally inappropriate and questionable access to one or two nurses close to him. The result is undermining the authority of a highly qualified sub manager, a trained Head of Department. In fact she should not be a victim of Micro-Management by a man who is NOT a nurse, a man who has no specialized clinical skills.
Mr. CEO, your sacred function is to skillfully coordinate the multiple units which make up the health care team holistically, and at the same time demonstrate how you can apply that art of dealing productively with human beings.
Your action may be construed as petty, vindictive and puerile in discharging your serious responsibility. In fact, in my view, it is shameful lawlessness to descend to the level of changing locks to doors just to “lock out” a single person who happens to be a senior.
In conclusion, may I remind all health care providers that we always make timely medical interventions to save lives. However on this occasion, I respectfully invite our worthy Minister of Public Health to make an overdue intervention in this sordid matter. You too, Sir, have a great task. More importantly, Mr. Minister, you have been entrusted to keep this beautiful Guyana at optimal wellness. We expect you to do just that without fear or favour.
