Amidst mild controversy ‘Just call me Boss’ competing out of the Jagdeo Stables with Trinidadian, Nela Mohammed, in saddle ran a well calculated race to upset a star studded line up including the fast finishing favourite ‘C.P Got Even’ to win the feature event in the Real President Cup Horse Race Meet at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park, West Coast Berbice last Sunday afternoon. Over 85 horses participated in the day’s event for over $7.5M in cash, trophies and other incentives. Minister of State, Joseph Harmon joined Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson and other senior government officials and witnessed a well organized and incident free day at the tracks. The feature event, the ‘C Class & Lower over a distance of 1600M attracted 10 horses and was a gem.
As the animals took flight ‘Just call Me Boss,’ the four year old thoroughbred, imported from Trinidad, sounded its intentions with an early surge to the lead.
The pack hit the first turn and into the back stretch bunched together and jostling for the lead with ‘Just Call Me Boss’ maintaining its position among the front runners. The excitement grew as C.P Got Even, Spit Fire and Jack in My Style got into the act, moving into position as the animals continued their gallop on the fast track.
The bunch hit the homestretch with ‘Just Call Me Boss’ responding to the urges of the jockey, Nela Mohammed and staying up front. It was around that time that ‘C.P Got Even’ of the Elcock/ Poonai stable, with Jockey Michael Semple on the hunch, surged ahead of the pack.
As the thoroughbred raced to the finish the animals veered into each other disrupting his rhythmic flow while ‘Just Call me Boss’ held its nerves and galloped over the line to take the 1.2M first prize and the President’s Cup, compliments of Trophy Stall, Bourda Market. C.P Got Even finished second with Three D and Spit Fire ending in that order.
‘Keep On Swinging’ represented the Jagdeo Stable with Paul Delph in mount and rode away with the race honours among the three year olds over 1400M and the $500,000 first prize that accompanied it. Settling Star and Its My Choice finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Plum Plum of the Shariff Stable won the event for four year old West Indies bred horses with a strong finish ahead of Rosetta, Captain Crook and Goodwill Boy respectively. The win was worth $500,000 and trophy.
‘Appealing Harvest’ with Paul Ramnauth in saddle, made it two wins for the Jumbo Jet stable in the F and Lower race and carted off the $ 350,000 and trophy while Campador, Release the Beast and Cassie finished in that order.
Witchipoo of the Shariff Stable also crossed the line first in the event for Guyana and West Indies bred two year old horses to canter off with the $350,000 first prize and trophy from 2nd and 3rd place finishers, The Girl In Mine and Maid Of The Cat. Goldikova also chalked up a win for the Shariff stable after defeating Cassie, Sweet Return and She So Special in the G3 and lower 1100M event to cart off the $300,000 and trophy.
Cat Messiah of the Ghansham Singh Stable also blazed the trail for an easy win over Mary Ann and Slim Shady respectively, in the ‘I and Lower’ over 1100M and won $260,000 and trophy.
Other winners include Red Jet in the J and lower event and Regina, of the Cheefoon stable, in the K and lower race while the Shariff stable rode away will the Champion stable prize for the second consecutive time.
Colin Ross was again adjudged the champion jockey while Mohammed ‘Nankoo’ Shariff copped the top trainer award. They all received trophies compliment of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall Bourda Market.
Meanwhile, Ministers, Harmon and Ferguson congratulated the winners and lauded the organizer for their shrewd organizational skills. They further pledged government’s continued support for the horse racing fraternity while highlighting government’s drive towards the improvement of sports and facilities across the country.
