Affected by a high number of school dropouts, some dropping out as early as third form, the Community of Lima Sands in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) needs the immediate attention of educators and the Welfare Departments in an attempt to try to address the frightening situation.
Complaints also of high levels of teenage pregnancy were also noted by several concerned residents. Residents believe that if attention is not placed on addressing the social ills in the Community, the current situation could become catastrophic.
Imran Baksh, a community worker, explained that the presence of the Education and Welfare Department should be more vibrant in the Lima Sands area. Baksh said that literacy programmes should also be considered for parents and children.
He added that in the school system, many children sometimes go to school without a meal and as such is recommending a soup kitchen to be implemented in the Schools.
He also highlighted the need for proper toilet and water facilities for the Nursery and Primary School pupils in that area.
