Self-confessed cell phone thief, Shane Thompson, has added yet another conviction to his rap sheet. The unemployed teenager, who has an eye for popular brand name cell phones, was yesterday jailed for 12 months after he was found guilty of committing an armed robbery.
The jail term was handed down yesterday by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
On July 13, last, Thompson, while armed with an ice pick, robbed Kasi Nelson of a Samsung Galaxy S5 valued $100,000, and $5200 cash.
During the trial Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Neville Jeffers called several witnesses.
After informing the court of her verdict, the Magistrate told Thompson that she hopes he is rehabilitated in prison, since he is a young man with a functional brain.
Thompson is currently serving a 12-month jail term for a similar offence. He was jailed last month by Magistrate Mc Lennan.
At his first court hearing he admitted that on July 13, at Sheriff and Garnett Streets, Campbellville, Georgetown he stole a Samsung Galaxy S5 from Amifah Mentore.
According to reports, on the day in question, Thompson and Mentore were passengers in a route 40 minibus when it stopped at the junction of Sheriff and Garnett Streets. They both disembarked at the same location, when Thompson accosted Mentore and demanded that she hand over her cell phone.
After Mentore refused to comply with the convict’s request, he grabbed the phone and ran.
This proved unfortunate for Thompson. Mentore raised an alarm and public spirited citizens came to her defence, chasing him all the way to John Street where he was apprehended. The phone was found on his person. He was taken to the Kitty Police Station, investigations were carried out and the charge was laid. Under caution he admitted to stealing the phone.
The prison terms will run concurrently.
